How To Add A FavIcon To Your Site In Under 5 Minutes

In this post I’m going to show you how easy it is to install a FavIcon on your website or blog. Its completely free and you can do it yourself in less than 5 minutes.

What is a FavIcon?

A FavIcon is just a simple graphic file that is displayed in the address bar of your browser and in your bookmark menu when you search for your favorite sites (FavIcon is short for Favorite Icon).  You really should be using a FavIcon for your sites because its good for branding and because it helps your site stand out a bit from the great majority of sites that don’t have one.

Here’s what my current FavIcon looks like:

It’s just a picture of my head (if I was a character from The Simpsons that is!)

When you create your own FavIcon you can use a picture of yourself, a logo, or pretty much anything else you want.  Ready to get started?  Good!

First, choose the image file you want to use.  Size doesn’t matter much but it has to be a perfect square.  If its not, just use whatever photo software you have to crop it into a square.

Then just go to this FavIcon Generator, browse to the file’s location on your computer and click Generate.  In just a second it’ll create your brand new FavIcon for you! Save it to your hard drive.

The next step is to upload it to the root folder of your domain.  If you put it in the wrong location it won’t display when people visit your site.

Finally, copy and paste the following code to the <head> section of your blog or webpages.

That’s it!  Now every time a visitor comes to your site they should see your shiny new FavIcon!
